PAPER III: MEDICAL SURGICAL PATIENT CARE-II
Duration: 120 hrs
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this course is to acquire knowledge and develop proficiency in caring for patients with medical and surgical disorders in varieties of health care setting and at home
GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:
- Describe the causes, symptoms, signs, treatment and prevention of diseases classified under medical surgical specialties.
- Demonstrate skill in carrying out patient care techniques and procedures with the scientific principles.
- Prepare patient care plan using patient care process and provide care to patients with these diseases.
COURSE CONTENTS:
Unit I: Oncology Patient care:
- Patient care management of patient with abnormal cell growth
- Patient care assessment- History and physical assessment
- Prevention, Screening, early detection, warning signs of cancer
- Classification of cancer.
- Treatment modalities:
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation
- Immunotherapy
- Surgical interventions
- Bone marrow transplant, stem cell and its management
- Rehabilitation of cancer patients.
Unit II: Patient care Management of patient with communicable diseases:
- Isolation
- Management of various infectious diseases.
– Virus: Measles, Chicken pox, influenza, small pox, mumps, Poliomyelitis,
rabies, AIDS
– Bacteria:-Diphtheria, Whooping Cough, Tetanus, Typhoid, Dysentery,
Cholera, Tuberculosis
– Mosquito:- Malaria, Filaria, Yellow fever, Dengue fever
Unit III: Patient care management of patients with neurological disorders
- Assessment of neurological function
- Neurological disorders- meningitis, encephalitis, brain tumor, head injury, CVA, spinal cord compression, brain abscess, myasthenia gravis, headache
Unit IV: Patient care management of patients with metabolic and endocrine
Disorders
- Assessment of endocrinal function
- Endocrinal disorders- DM, hypo and hyperthyroidism, obesity, goiter, addisons disease, Cushing syndrome, hyper & hypo pituitarism, hyper & hypo parathyroidism, thyrotoxicosis.
Unit V: Patient care management of patients with disorders of Blood disorders
- Assessment of cardiovascular function
- Management of patients with – anemia, leukemia, hemophilia
Unit VI: Patient care management of patients with disorders of ENT disorders
- Assessment of ENT functions
- Disorders- glaucoma, cataract, conjunctivitis, blindness, otitis media, meinner’s disease, Foreign Bodies in nose, ear and throat, Impacted wax,
Unit VII: Patient care management of patients with disorders of
Musculoskeletal disorders
- Assessment of Musculo skeletal functions
- Disorders- fracture, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteomyelitis, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, sprain, myositis
